Grouting Your Tiles Right

When installing tiles, the most satisfying part of finishing the job is grouting. Grouting is the process of waterproofing the gaps in between tiles on your floors. For ceramic tiles, grout is a cement-based bonding material used for filling the joints between them.

The grout joint between the tiles is usually porous and needs to be sealed properly to prevent damage and discoloration. When you protect your tiles properly, it will be resistant to staining, be easier to clean, and maintain hygiene in your home.

Before you go running to the stores to pick up grout for your new ceramic tile flooring installation project to be completed, do your homework. There are different types of grout for ceramic tiles according to the width of the grout joint.

These fall into four basic types of grout:
1.    Finely sanded grout – Used for floor tiles where the joints are 1/8” to 3/8” wide.
2.    Unsanded grout – Used only for wall tiles where the grout joint is less than 1/8” wide.
3.    Quarry grout – The same as finely sanded grout except that a coarser grade of sand is used. Used for joints that are 3/8” to 1/2” wide.
4.    Epoxy grout – This consists of an epoxy resin and hardener. Used ideally for countertops and areas susceptible to stains.

Now that you know the types of grouts that are available, you won’t be in a state of confusion when you go to the stores. However, there are some more important things to keep in mind when choosing the right grout for your kitchen ceramic tile flooring or bathroom ceramic tile flooring.

•    The wider the joint, the coarser the sand needs to be as it prevents the grout from shrinking and cracking.
•    Grout comes in a wide variety of pre-mixed colors, so you can use this to your advantage and create very different looks with colors.
•    The standard grout joint size for floor tiles is 1/4” wide and 1/16” for walls.
